It seems like we aren’t done learning new things about Sister Wives. Now, Gwendlyn Brown, daughter of Kody Brown and ex-wife Christine Brown’s daughter is sharing new insights into what it was like growing up in front of the cameras.
Alongside other children of reality stars, Gwendlyn talked about her experiences filming with her large family. And she admitted that she was “super into” the process of filming the show when she was younger, but that changed a bit over the years. And if rumors are to be believed, the show may be coming to an end.
Sister Wives star Gwendlyn Brown says kids weren’t paid for appearing on the show
“We just got thrown into fame and thrown into money,” Gwendlyn told Teen Vogue. “And I stopped wanting and needing things. She hinted that the show gave her family the means to get out of a “poverty situation” when the series began.
“Life is a lot easier for a kid that’s not going hungry,” she added. “It was quite a blessing initially.”
However, despite the show gaining ground, it is currently in its 19th season, Gwendlyn claimed that she and her 17 siblings didn’t receive direct compensation for their participation. “The network only paid the parents,” she alleged. “I’m not sure if they expected the parents to pay us kids, but we weren’t paid.”
Gwendlyn said it was her mom, Christine, who made the choice to pay her kids. Gwendlyn doesn’t know how much she’s earned over the years but claimed that “it certainly hasn’t been a fair share.”
The magazine also reached out to TLC. They claim that “compensation is handled in accordance with contractual commitments and application labor laws and regulations.”
Christine, who divorced Kody in 2021 and got remarried to David Woolley, shared that money is set aside for kids’ college funds and vehicles. She did, however, confirm that Gwendlyn and her siblings weren’t paid. She may reveal more in her memoir coming out in September.
As for Gwendlyn, she has a new perspective on reality TV. “I’m growing a bigger dislike for it. In the past, I was like ‘this is my normal,’” she said. “But now it’s like, ‘this doesn’t have to be my normal,’ and it’s weird.”
Sister Wives airs Sundays at 10/9c on TLC and streams on Discovery+.
