In the next episode of Below Deck, Bosun Caio Poltronieri sits down with his team, following a meeting with the captain. Captain Kerry Titheradge had questioned if the deck crew was “up for it.”
“We have to get better on many, many things,” Caio reported back to his deck team. Um, isn’t he the one who forgot to load the guests’ luggage, who let a banana boat drift away because it wasn’t tied up and wasn’t communicating with the captain on the first docking?
But crew member Kyle Stillie wasn’t buying it. “Don’t come down here and bitch and moan at us,” he says in a confessional. “Like, we’re working our asses off … This is your fault, mate.”
Below Deck’s Captain Kerry is forced to take over in Season 12 Episode 4
“The thing is,” Kyle later tells the other deck crew, “he didn’t call all four of us to the bridge, did he? … That’s all I’ll say.”
But not feeling confident in his deck crew, Captain Kerry makes the unusual choice to lead an evening excursion. “So, I’ll take some pressure off,” he tells Caio. “I’ll take the guests out tonight.”
“Caio had a tough day,” Kerry says in a confessional. “I feel compassion for that. I’ve had some great mentors who’ve shown me the right way, so I want to … support him to succeed. I want the guy to succeed.”
So the captain takes the guests on an evening paddle in neon-bedecked acrylic kayaks. The clear boats make it easy to see down into the water, and the neon glow sticks provide light, which attracts sea life. “Oh, my God! There’s fish down there,” says one delighted guest.
“At night, everything comes alive,” the captain says in a production interview. “There’s turtles, there’s fish, there’s beautiful reef. The glow of the kayaks is incredible. They can see things that you’ll never see during the day … I think it’s just awesome!”
At the end of the day, the guests were more than pleased with their nighttime paddle. Captain Kerry led an excellent excursion, but did Caio learn anything? Whether he can improve his deck skills and be a better leader remains to be seen.
Below Deck airs Mondays at 8/7c on Bravo. It streams on Hayu in the UK and Ireland.
