Are you really a celebrity if you haven’t had experience with a cult? Actor, director, and Emmy award-winner Colman Domingo almost accidentally added cult member to his list of accolades on a trip to Mexico City.
And to be fair, it’s not like that would have been a stretch. The word cult encompasses a great many things, usually with religious fervor. Some may appear completely normal from the outside. In the realm of reality TV, cults have been brought up in several instances. People have a wide view of what the word means.
Colman Domingo knew something was odd
Colman shared his experience on an episode of Mythical Kitchen’s Last Meals. He said he was almost recruited to a cult before he realized what was happening. On the same episode, Colman talked about his bartending days and an experience that touched him immensely.
He also touched on the fact that while isolation can be good, he also makes active choices to be around people too. Because how can you tell stories about people and not be around them? “I don’t want to end up crazy or weird (from isolation),” he shared.
Host Josh Scherer laughed. “You haven’t joined a cult yet, now that you’ve moved to Malibu?” he asked. Colman replied, “I almost joined a cult in Mexico City, but that’s another story.”
The pair laughed. Josh joked that he was wondering who all the folks were in matching outfits waiting for Colman. The actor explained that the incident happened a few months ago and that the people were very friendly.
“It was just a group of nice people. And then I was like, ‘Wait a minute, this is weird,’” he shared. “I was like, ‘What’s up with you guys?’” It was his first ever encounter with a cult and he ended up doing research and finding out more about them.
Cults indeed come in very many shapes, sizes, and beliefs. And they are quite prolific in entertainment. There was the time that some of the ladies of Real Housewives of Salt Lake City thought Mary Cosby might be heading a cult. Last year, the production company for RHOSLC put out a casting call for anyone who had experience with a cult (ostensibly for a new religious-based show).
