Rosie O’Donnell Reveals Downfall of Ellen DeGeneres Friendship: ‘Never Gotten Over It’

Rosie O’Donnell is clearly still holding onto a lot of hurt over the breakdown of her friendship with Ellen DeGeneres. In a recent interview the star reflected on a huge moment they shared on screen, as well as the simple sentence that left Rosie feeling completely blindsided.

Rosie O’Donnell revealed new details about why Ellen DeGeneres friendship ended

It may have been more than 20 years, but Rosie isn’t over the betrayal she felt from Ellen. During this week’s episode of the “No Filter with Kate Langbroek” podcast, the comedian discussed the hurt she felt when Ellen played down their relationship during a talk show appearance.

On a 2004 episode of Larry King Live, the host asked Ellen: “What ever happened to Rosie O’Donnell? Her show went down the tubes.”

Ellen replied: “I don’t know Rosie. We’re not friends.”

This came as a huge shock to Rosie, who considered Ellen much more than a casual acquaintance. As she explained in the podcast, the pair had known each other for 30 years and she had photos of Ellen holding her newborn children.

She said: “That was one of the most painful things that ever happened to me in show business and my life. I couldn’t believe it. It was very painful, and we’ve never gotten over it.”

Rosie claimed that Ellen has never understood her hurt. She said: “And a lot of times, she has written me and said, ‘Why are you still talking about this [after] all these years?’”

The implication that Ellen may not be so nice probably won’t come as a surprise to those who worked The Ellen DeGeneres Show. Accusations of a toxic work environment and mistreatment of staff dealt a major blow to her career.
