Twenty-four years ago today was one of the darkest days in American history. My husband and I lived in Reno at the time, and he went off to work as usual. I was home with our nearly one-year-old son when he called me and told me to turn on the TV.
After I did so, I sat and tried to understand what was happening on the screen. I was a little bit late to the story and couldn’t quite catch the plot. But eventually I realized that a plane had hit the New York World Trade Center building, and the structure was on fire. Soon another plane hit the other tower, and what followed was nearly incomprehensible.
Nearly 3,000 innocent lives were stolen that day, most of them in the World Trade Center. As the twin towers fell and office workers rushed down the stairs to escape, firefighters trudged upwards. 343 fire fighters and 71 law enforcement officers died when the towers fell. In remembrance of those brave men and women, Real Housewives of Miami star Guerdy Abraira paid tribute to her firefighter husband Russell Abraira.
Guerdy Abraira heralded the “bravery” of firefighters on 9/11
Guerdy’s husband Russell is a chief firefighter and paramedic who works for the City of Miami. Still going strong after 29 years together, the high school sweethearts share two sons, Miles and Liam. She is understandably proud, not only of the work Russell does, but also of the person he is.
“9/11 was a day of unimaginable loss and undeniable courage,” the wedding planner began her Instagram tribute. “Thousands of souls were taken — from office workers, to innocent passengers on those flights, to all the first responders who gave their lives trying to save them. Today we honor every single one. We will never forget.”
In addition to the firefighters of New York City, Guerdy wanted to acknowledge emergency rescue workers everywhere. In Russell’s case, he doesn’t just help people at his job. His caring instincts are ingrained, as he demonstrated taking care of his wife throughout her battle with breast cancer.
“Let’s also honor the firefighters who continue to show up with courage day after day, my husband included among them,” she added. “Your bravery does not go unnoticed.”
The Real Housewives of Miami airs Thursdays at 9/8c on Bravo in the US. It streams on Hayu in the UK and Ireland.
