Mariah Carey’s estranged brother has made a series of claims against the singer, including that her “breakdowns” are the reason they fell out. Morgan Carey also argued that Mariah made defamatory statements about him in her 2020 memoir, The Meaning of Mariah Carey.
Mariah Carey is being sued by her estranged brother

In case you missed it, Mariah is being sued by her brother for $20million over her book. In The Meaning of Mariah Carey, the singer recalled her childhood and accused her brother of being a drug dealer. Morgan denied these allegations and is suing his sister for damaging his reputation as a result.
Now, court filings obtained by RadarOnline show Morgan is blaming his sister’s mental health for fracturing their relationship. To recap, Mariah was diagnosed with bipolar disorder in 2001, and she was later hospitalized due to suffering a physical and mental breakdown.
“In spite of their decades-long affinity for each other, their relationship began to sour in the wake of Mariah’s breakdowns, culminating in the publishing of her book,” the court document stated.
Previously speaking about her mental health, Mariah told PEOPLE that she kept her diagnosis secret for a long time. “Until recently, I lived in denial and isolation and in constant fear someone would expose me,” she said in 2018. “It was too heavy a burden to carry, and I simply couldn’t do that anymore.”
“I sought and received treatment, I put positive people around me, and I got back to doing what I love — writing songs and making music,” Mariah continued. “I’m hopeful we can get to a place where the stigma is lifted from people going through anything alone. It can be incredibly isolating. It does not have to define you, and I refuse to allow it to define me or control me.”
