Hilary Duff’s overbearing mom killed any chance of a long-lasting friendship with Frankie Muniz.
That’s according to the Malcolm in the Middle star, who says the Lizzie McGuire actress was the first person he got to know when he moved to Los Angeles to film his show.
Like many parents of celebrities, it seems as though Hilary’s mom often poked her nose where it didn’t belong. Her involvement in Hilary’s acting career early on drove a wedge between the two kids.
Frankie Muniz and Hilary Duff were once great friends
Some friendships simply don’t last. That seems to be the case with Frankie and Hilary, who were thick as thieves when they first met over two decades ago.
Numerous child actors lived in an apartment complex in Burbank, California, something Frankie didn’t want. Even so, he often went to that area to hang out with child stars. It was through some of those actors that Frankie met Hilary, and a friendship began to blossom. “We became really, really good friends. We had a really great relationship for a long time,” Frankie said on The Joe Vulpis Podcast.
All of that changed when he met Hilary’s mother, Susan. Frankie and she became acquainted after appearing on an episode of Lizzie McGuire. “She was intense,” Frankie said of Susan, the polar opposite of Hilary.
Frankie says Susan asked him about his summer plans, one time and he said he was shooting the movie Agent Cody Banks. Hilary’s mom seemed to poke and prod, asking if there was a female lead that had been cast. The next day, Susan told Frankie they’d be spending the summer together because they cast Hilary as the female lead and his love interest in the film.
Frankie says he wasn’t happy that her mom cashed in on that, seemingly exploiting their friendship for her daughter’s benefit. While he says he had no problem with Hilary getting the part, he didn’t appreciate her mom going behind his back to do it. He also didn’t like that the studio just assumed it’d be fine.
Hilary’s mom clearly rubbed Frankie the wrong way, and the two haven’t spoken since production of the movie concluded.
Malcolm in the Middle is going through a reboot next year starring Frankie, while Hilary is preparing to release some new music,
