Jon Stewart has reportedly signed with CBS for another year of hosting The Daily Show. Stewart will remain executive producer for the series on Comedy Central through December 2026. This move comes just months after Paramount announced its intention to take Colbert’s “Late Show” off-air next year.
Jon Stewart renews Daily Show
Stewart, who hosted The Daily Show from 1999 to 2015, returned as a host in 2024, on a once-a-week basis. Now, after Stewart’s contract renewal, Comedy Central head Ari Pearce praised him and his new team in a statement. “Jon Stewart continues to elevate the genre he created. His return is an ongoing commitment to the incisive comedy and sharp commentary that define ‘Daily Show,'” Pearce remarked.
He added, “The renewal is a win for audiences, for Comedy Central and for all our programming partners. We’re proud to support Jon and the extraordinary news team.”
When asked for a comment by NBC News, a spokesperson for Stewart reportedly responded, saying, “Jon is going to save all his comments for the show tonight.”
This news comes just a month after late-night television hit a rough patch. In October, both The Late Show with Stephen Colbert and Jimmy Kimmel Live! were temporarily suspended due to controversial political commentary, leaving fans without their nightly dose of satire.
Additionally, Paramount’s decision to end the late-night talk shows on the network comes after the format’s economics have seen a slump in viewership.
Earlier, when announcing that Stephen Colbert’s show will end in May 2026, CBS executives said in a statement, “We consider Stephen Colbert irreplaceable and will retire ‘The Late Show’ franchise. We are proud that Stephen called CBS home. He and the broadcast will be remembered in the pantheon of greats that graced late night television. This is purely a financial decision against a challenging backdrop in late night.”
Further, they mentioned that this decision is not related in any way to “the show’s performance, content or other matters happening at Paramount.”
