Top Chef Season 9 Heads to Texas! Two New Judges Added

Go big or go home is the motto for Top Chef season 9 as Bravo has just announced the show will be heading to Texas!

Even more surprising is the addition of two new judges. Famed chef, restaurateur and former Food network star Emeril Lagasse and acclaimed chef Hugh Acheson have been added to the judging panel for the all new season.

Returning to join Emeril and Hugh at the judge’s table are host Padma Lakshmi and head judge, chef Tom Colicchio, alongside judge Gail Simmons.

The new season will embrace the Lone Star State’s adage that all things are bigger as in a series first, the production will head to three cities within the season – Austin, Dallas and San Antonio.

Season nine also promises to showcase many surprising twists and turns and never-before-seen challenges and events. Bravo has yet to announce the premiere date but “Top Chef: Texas” will air later this fall.

In the meantime, the second season of “Top Chef Just Desserts” will premiere Aug. 24 at 9/8c on Bravo with 14 pastry chefs competing to out-bake their competition. The winning chef will receive $100,000, a feature in Food & Wine magazine and a showcase at the Annual Food & Wine Cayman Cookout.

  1. Looove that Padma will be so close!! might just have to take a lil road trip~! I’d love to meet her! ;)

    so are they filming now??

  2. Love Top Chef, but I am not that keen on Top Chef Desserts. Don’t know why.

    Can’t wait for the season.

  3. Yee Haw! I’m stoked! I think Texas is a great idea for diverse cuisine

  4. Great! I so need a break from the “Housewives” shows. Just cut-down on the team challenges this time around.

  5. Could Padma be any more monotone and boring? Perhaps she should spend a little more time working on her personality, rather than looking in the mirror.

  6. Yes! Yes! Yes! Programs with people that actually have talent!! I love the Dessert Top Chef as well. Thank God, as the Housewife’s shows have turned in to pure trash TV. Bravo, save your channel and sell that franchise to Jerry Springer(No offense to Jerry.) I would put money on it, if Springer offered these vile women of NJ and NY, OC and Miami on his show they would do it. Anything for fame and money, right? That said I do like the Beverly Hills shows sans Taylor. Most of these women have wealth and live that lifestyle that these shows are supposed to portray, right?

  7. @2domino- me too. i dno why but top chef desserts just doesnt grab me like top chef does..

im uber excited for them being tx! finally get some TRUE southern cookin goin on! fry me some okra, bake me some jalapeno corn bread, slop on those ribs..and call me a happy gal!!!

  8. Oh, yes, yes, yes!!! I lurves me some Top Chef.
They have been filming for a while now. Go to Eater.com (I know that sounds bad, but it is a legit foodie website) for candid photos of the chefs shopping at Whole Foods. A very prominent sous chef at the hottest restaurant in Austin, TX has gone MIA….for a while.

  9. @OklaHW: I’m pretty sure they’re either in production here in Austin or have already wrapped up.

  10. Oh yeah theyre coming to my state! I live in Austin. So excited!! Love love top chef

  11. @ Phoebe
I agree I don’t care for Padma much at all, and am not excited for her return to hosting. But hey I’m just glad that there’s a show other than housewives that’s going to be on the air lol! I love Top Chef, I hope this season is awesome.

  12. Why don’t these shows ever come to Houston? It’s the LARGEST CITY IN TEXAS & the 4TH LARGEST IN THE NATION. *facepalm* Anyways I’m still happy they’ll be in TX!

  13. YESSSSSSSSSS! I love love love Top Chef! Besides Flipping Out, it is my favorite Bravo show.

  14. Use to love watching this show…but haven’t for a couple seasons. Maybe I will give it try again.

  15. @12 Texasgurl…sorry to say this but I’ve been around your state a bit and have to say my least favorite place to go is Houston…flat, hot, smoggy, sprawling. Dallas is ok but Austin is by far my favorite.

@5 phoebe………I just love this show, too, but I find Padma very irritating. Her voice is even worse than a monotone — she always sounds like there are marbles in her mouth or like her tongue is numb from novocaine at the dentist’s office.

  17. LOL….This “Show” has jumped the Blue Fin, the Tuna, the Konch, the Eel, the Sole, the Albatross, and most definightly, da Shark….and yeah, an Albatross ain’t a fish, it’s a Bird…..but it sounds lika fish…[to me]…..hahahahahaha……..LOL……..

  18. @ meinnyc – LOL – I still watch it. I wish we could taste the food though.

  19. Not so excited since Bravo TC wanted Texas taxpayers to foot the bill for their filming, hospitality etc. Dallas, Houston, Austin cities convention bureaus said no thank you..(not sure what SA did) but the state stepped in and sent them money. I know it’s standard to give filming company tax breaks etc..but to want even more especially these days just smacked of rude…I mean come on Bravo!

  20. Re: Texas Gurl. rumor has it that Houston did NOT want Top Chef in their city. Take it up with your Chamber of Commerce.

  21. Oh, they already taped the Austin, San Antonio, Dallas portions. It’s basically a Tour de Texas. I’m not clear, since Houston smacked Bravo hard for holding out their hands, that they filmed in Houston even with the money from Gov Goodhair.

  22. Love Top Chef and LOVE, LOVE, Tom Colicchio. The girls at work laugh at my crush on him.

  23. @Nicks:

    hahahhaha….LOL….

How’er U?….lol….Ya, I have no problem with the food or most of the contestants it’s Tombo da Fameho[like Docta ILL..imo…lol…And Lady Padma….hahaha…that I have the problem watching….know their stories and it ain’t all squeaky clean….The hole format should be “freshened up”…imho….lol…

  24. Oh god NOOOOOOO! That Hugh guy was on Masters and he was so annoying and awful. Yuck.

  25. Can’t wait for Top Chef and even better it’s in Texas. I can understand the cities not wanting to send them money, but overall it’s a win b/c so many will see all the tourist spots they hit and it will bring in money. LOVE Padma, Gail & especially Tom. A little iffy on how the 2 new judges will fit in. Gotta agree with the others that Just Desserts just doesn’t grab my attention. I’ve tried watching it several times and just can’t seem to sit still. Always end up doing something else.

  26. Gayle and Padma have become little divas, I guess being on Top Chef has gone o their heads…..I will watch because I just love the competition and seeing what they all come up with food wise when under the gun or should I say knife….LOL….

  27. @ meinnyc – I am great, I have alot of free time this week, relaxing with RT.
@BondGirl – I like the competion under pressure as well. Some are so talented.

  28. I love Top Chef…..can’t say that about Just Desserts though. There are already too many “dessert” type shows on tv, i.e Food Network channel.

  29. I love Top Chef, I’ve watched every season plus Top Chef Masters. However, I just can’t watch Just Desserts. I might have made it thru the 3rd or 4th show, but really didn’t like it. I felt sorry for the judges because they had to eat all those desserts and it seemed just excessive. Plus the contestants were lunatics.

  30. Top Chef is the only reason I’ll watch TV. It’s the best show EVER.

  31. What about Houston we do eat, and have great food! Have to say I”m a little insulted Bravo.

Heather doesn’t know when to keep her big fat mouth shut. Its embarrassing to watch her lash out at her partner, not to mention a stupid thing to do since its a double elimination. What a dumb fat broad.
