Luke Pell Thought He Was Going To Be The Bachelor & He Had His Bags Packed

The fans from Bachelor Nation were collectively shocked when 2-time Bachelorette alum Nick Viall was named as the next star of The Bachelor. Everyone and their grandmothers thought that it was between Luke Pell and Chase McNary from JoJo Fletcher’s Bachelorette season. After all, that’s how the franchise typically works: the star of one season is a cast off from the season before.

So no one ever thought that Nick who was on the show two and three seasons ago was even in the running and when I say “no one” apparently this included Luke as well because he thought that he was chosen to star in the Bachelor and he was all set to film.

As a fan, I think that Nick was the best choice because he is the most interesting person and he has been through so much with this franchise. At the same time, all signs pointed to Luke getting the role so I am very curious about what ended up happening. And Luke is too since he spoke to Us Weekly about how he was very fall along into the process of becoming the Bachelor.

Luke revealed, “We were all satisfied, had agreed to the contracts and everything was moving forward.” Oh, damn. But actually, gets worse than that. ABC only told him about the switch up at the very last minute: “I was checked in to my flight to come to L.A. I got a call from producers Sunday night at about 10 p.m. They said ABC had decided to quote-unquote go in a different direction. I was supposed to fly out Monday morning at 9 a.m. I had my bags packed and everything. Most dramatic Monday ever!”

They should make a separate reality show about the Bachelor casting process because this sounds like some very dramatic stuff. There’s more though. Luke got so far into the process that he had clothes picked out and dates planned. Luke elaborated, “We had planned for intro filming and had planned to have my sister come on for a date and give advice as part of the show. I met with the wardrobe guys. Everything was moving forward. Everyone on the production level was expecting it to be me, as well.” Wow. That’s wild. Did they do this with Nick and/or Chase as well? Or was it really just a last minute decision to announce Nick? Will we ever know? Probably not, but I am definitely curious.

It seems like the Bachelor franchise will live on forever, so it’s possible that Luke can get another shot at staring in his own season, but it doesn’t seem like he would take it. Luke said,  “I probably wouldn’t do it. I don’t want to wait in the wings for what decisions they can make for my life. I want to head back into taking control of my own destiny.”

I don’t blame him at all. ABC really did him dirty. Their rejection makes JoJo eliminating Luke seem like total child’s play. Everyone was pretty devastated when JoJo sent Luke packing so I have a feeling that Luke will not have any issue finding love on his own and without the camera crew.
