UPDATE: Amber Portwood Admitted To Having Bipolar Disorder, “Safe” After Apparent Suicide Attempt

Days after her apparent suicide attempt, Teen Mom star Amber Portwood remains in a hospital.

It is however her shocking revelation last summer, which managed to fly under the radar for some reason, that is making headlines today. See last summer Amber, 21, revealed to PEOPLE magazine that she has bipolar disorder – a condition characterized by dramatic shifts in mood.

“I take medication,” she said to PEOPLE at the time. “I haven’t [taken] anything today. Am I acting crazy? This is me though, and I like it.”

Amber revealed she was diagnosed back in 2008 after a going through a very depressing time following the birth of her daughter Leah. And despite admitting her disorder, Amber expressed doubts that the diagnosis was accurate. “I don’t think I’m bipolar, to be honest with you,” she said. “I’m just really outgoing. I think everybody thinks they’re bipolar these days. You’re a teenager, you have hormones. You’re gonna switch up every two seconds!”

Sources however add that Amber has been in therapy for two years.

Meanwhile, Amber’s on-off boyfriend Gary Shirley tweeted yesterday that Amber is doing better. “Amber is safe and getting the help she needs right now. Thanks for your prayers and support,” wrote Gary.

And more details are also now coming out about Tuesday’s events as it appears Gary also called 911 after Amber threatened to harm herself. She apparently thought he was cheating on her.

In the 911 call, Gary begged the cops to check on Amber stating she told him “she’s going to hang herself.” Gary added, “I just spoke with my girlfriend and she had said something to me … said she’s having a hard time with her life … call the police, they can find my body in the garage.”

As of today, Amber is still being evaluated at St. John’s Hospital in Indiana with a source stating that Gary visited her briefly on Tuesday afternoon. Amber’s hospitalization makes sense as those who threaten or attempt suicide are kept under a 72-hour hold.
