Sister Wives Recap: Sink Or Swim

sister wives boat 1

I feel like Sister Wives is glossing over just how much is involved in adopting children when there is a living parent who hasn’t terminated parental rights, but what do I know? Plus, who can be bothered with legal woes when there is a Pirate Festival complete with a cardboard boat race. Kody Brown and his kids are excited to partake, and the family has to take a class on how to build the boat, and Meri promises to be the biggest cheerleader…from a distance. The crew decides to split into two teams to build two boats. Janelle is leading one group and Kody, Robyn, and Christine are arguing over the other boat. Christine doesn’t understand why Robyn keeps arguing because Kody is going to do whatever he wants regardless.

The Brown kids are excited about the race, but not the process leading up to it. Parents will be yelling, dad’s hair is getting more uncontrollable, and the kids are fighting for more attention. Kody keeps reminding his wives that he is always right, and he has wonderful grand plans that aren’t going to work out given their time constraint. Robyn responds that she’s nothing but a supportive wife, but she likes that Christine has her back with an aggressive Kody. He doesn’t want to lose, and Christine and Robyn are bonding over impersonating their pissy husband. Janelle comes down the cul-de-sac to check out the competition but she quickly retreats when she senses the vibe of Kody tag team fighting with Christine and Robyn. Over on Janelle’s team, the kids are the ones causing s ruckus. No one is enjoying bossy pants Gabe who clearly takes after his old man. I’m starting to think this fun family bonding experience is anything but…

Kody and Robyn take a break from boat building to text with Robyn’s divorce attorney. They learn that her ex-husband is in the lawyer’s office signing to terminate his parental rights. The pair rushes to share the news with a more absent than normal Meri. Meri hugs Robyn and kind of dodges Kody before he forces her into a half hug. They call Janelle and invite Christine over to tell her in person. Christine is giddy with the news, and Meri has a fake smile plastered on her face as she receives another hug from her sister wife. She won’t even look at the camera when she speaks of how much her divorce from Kody will change the family for the better, and don’t get me started on her expression when she’s sitting on the sofa during interviews. Hmmm…what–or who–could have her so preoccupied?? Sounds like a question for Nev and Max!

Because Robyn likes to remind Meri at every turn that she is no longer the legal spouse, she’s invited her to be present when they tell Robyn’s kids. Robyn’s oldest daughter is bawling out of happiness, but the other two look tentatively excited. Robyn explains that they can still talk to and see their biological father. Kody is a bit befuddled he doesn’t receive more of a response from his step-kids, and he orders them to thank Meri for her part in the process. Poor Meri is subjected to even more unwanted hugs. The rest of the Brown brood has a similar reaction to the news. Kody wonders why no one seems more enthusiastic, but Robyn knows that the kids don’t see the news as any sort of change. They’ve seen Robyn’s kids as their siblings so this isn’t different.

Down at Janelle’s house, she’s trying to ensure that they will be finished in time for the race. Janelle has enlisted Logan and Hunter to come row their boat. Robyn’s oldest daughter shares with Janelle that she had a great conversation with her biological dad where she thanked him for allowing her to be adopted by Kody. After the sweet exchange, Janelle and son Gabe are arguing as much as Kody and Christine. Is it just me, or do the Browns seem to be keeping U-Haul in business? Unfortunately, the truck Christine rented is too small to house their boat. Kody is barking orders and calls Christine a crybaby…and not in a joking way. Gabe has stolen Kody’s coveted black paint to name their vessel “SS Enough To Participate.” The other team’s boat is a pink fancy Viking ship which Robyn is turning into a floating ad for My Sister Wife’s Closet.

At the festival, the family is ready to compete. The boats are all incredibly impressive. Janelle just hopes that Logan and Hunter’s athleticism will allow them to row across the pond fast enough to avoid sinking. The crew does a great job and make it across the water is very good time. The other group dons Viking caps before their maiden voyage, and Kody is terrified about being embarrassed. When Kody and kids start rowing, Christine and Meri are in tears from hysterical laughter. Apparently, they neglected a major part of the race…teaching the children how to row! The pink monstrosity is going in circles. Janelle’s team places second, and while Kody’s crew was the slowest, their boat won an award for creativity.

Now, let’s focus back on that adoption…
