When the Real Housewives franchise first started, it seemed like all of the women were wealthy with fabulous lives. With time, money problems and shady finances have become a staple among the cast members.
One person who has not had money issues (since Season 1 of her show, at least) is Bethenny Frankel. She is building up her SkinnyGirl empire and constantly referencing it. Now she’s throwing some shade-or even accurate criticism- toward plenty of her Housewives contemporaries.
In an interview with Time, Bethenny explained, “You can’t put yourself in a position where, if the s–t hit the fan, you couldn’t pay all of your bills at one time.”
She added, “If the world came to an end, I would be able to pay for everything. I might not be left with much, but I can afford what I have.” Clearly. Skinnygirl has sold everything from alcohol to lunch meat to jeans. She can definitely afford what she has and whatever else she wants.

And this is where the shade comes in- depending on how you read it. The specific question that prompted Bethenny’s response was not indicated, but before the quote in question, the Time article says “As for many of her Housewives costars? Frankel isn’t optimistic.”
Then Bethenny says, “They can’t afford the lives they’re living.” No kidding. At this point there are more Housewives that can’t afford their lifestyles than Housewives who can.
Bethenny added, “And if the music stops, they’re going to get in some trouble.” Unfortunately Bethenny did not name specific names and it’s very possible this quote got pulled out of context, but here’s the thing: Bethenny is not wrong. Most of these people are in rented mansions, wearing rented clothing, and constantly bragging about businesses that will never actually launch. There are plenty of Housewives who can’t afford their lifestyle, I would just love to know which ladies Bethenny had on her mind when she made these remarks.
