Carl Radke Talks Brother’s Passing, Sobriety Journey and Wanting To Help Other Men

Carl Radke has evolved tremendously since the early days of Summer House. He turned his life around in the most remarkable way by living sober after the tragic death of his brother from an overdose.

Summer House fans speculate that Carl’s dedication to his newfound lifestyle may have been a factor in calling off his engagement to Lindsay Hubbard. But the former Loverboy VP may be trying to recover from that unfortunate scandal by channeling himself into a motivator for others who have struggled with addiction.

Carl speaks of being a “strong man” without alcohol

Carl recently spoke with Men’s Health on the matter of his brother’s passing, and how it inspired his sobriety journey.

“It was obviously one of the most devastating things that’s ever happened to our family. It made me really believe that I really want to have a family – but I can’t get married and have a child if I don’t clean up my life first,” the reality TV star explained.

The Summer House star questioned, “What kind of person am I if I grieve the loss of my brother that overdosed by doing cocaine and drinking all the time?”

So, Carl took a personal tragedy and used it as a motivation to live sober. And he admitted to learning a lot in the process.

“The beauty of what I learned is that there’s so many other people on the other side of that door that you’re afraid to walk through,” he explained.

Carl learned he wasn’t alone

Those people that Carl spoke of living “very healthy, fruitful lives that fell to their knees because of alcohol and drugs,” made him realize that he wasn’t alone in his struggles.

“You almost think you’re the only one that has that problem,” he added.

In looking to the future, Carl thinks of using his platform to help others. He feels that modern life creates a pattern of unhealthy behavior among men.

“I think a lot of men have developed their personas with alcohol. And you can still be a confident, strong male without it. When you have more folks that talk about [sobriety] openly and honestly, it creates an environment where people are more open to actually asking questions and asking for help,” he explained.

The reality TV star plans to bring further awareness to sober living in future seasons of Summer House.

Carl concluded, “If I can make one person that watches Summer House or one person that follows me get sober, get help, feel less alone, make a call to check in on a friend, that is what it’s all about.”

Summer House Season 8 premieres in early 2024.
