Lately, it seems that several Bravolebrities are reconsidering their relationship with alcohol. Notably, Southern Charm’s Shep Rose was vocal about changing his patterns of behavior during the Season 9 Reunion after a particularly hectic experience at BravoCon 2023.
Vanderpump Rules star, Tom Schwartz, also spoke of potentially living sober. Though it’s not clear whether the VPR star committed to it in real time.
Tom spoke of “moderation” in his relationship with alcohol
Schwartz’s brother Robert’s (Bert) health took a turn for the worse while filming for Season 11. Producers caught his reaction to the news in a conversation with his former boss, Lisa Vanderpump.
Tom shared the “really bad news” that Bert had to be transferred to the hospital from rehab for suspected cirrhosis.
According to the National Institutes of Health, cirrhosis is the scarring of the liver, resulting in permanent damage. Healthy tissue is replaced by scar tissue, until the liver is unable to function correctly. One cause of this disease is long term alcohol abuse.
Schwartz revealed how Bert’s “dependency on alcohol” changed his brother from a “ray of sunshine.” The recent event gave the reality TV star pause, and had him thinking that “moderation” with alcohol was the way to go.
Producers then set up a conversation between the Schwartz & Sandy’s co-owner and VPR co-star Lala Kent. Lala, notably, had completed five years of sobriety. Tom ordered a non-alcoholic drink for the scene and claimed to be “sober curious.” Lala could only react with skepticism.
This wasn’t the first time Schwartz considered cutting back on his alcohol consumption. In 2018, he claimed, “without a doubt” that he would “slow down.” Indeed, the VPR star has been under the influence at times when filming Vanderpump Rules.
“I almost always practice moderation. I’ve had a sloppy few…,” he said at the time.
Well, hopefully Bert’s health has improved. As for Schwartz, perhaps he stuck to the idea of a lifestyle change.
