Tom Sandoval Says He Got More Hate Than Convicted Rapist Danny Masterson

Content warning: This article contains minor reference to rape. Do not read on if even the mention of the topic is triggering.

Just when we thought Tom Sandoval couldn’t get any worse, he goes running his mouth again. If the Vanderpump Rules star has taught fans one thing, it’s that they can’t keep their expectations low enough.

Most recently, Tom was slammed for this little number regarding Scandoval: “I’m not a pop-culture historian really but I witnessed the O.J. Simpson thing and George Floyd and all these big things, which is really weird to compare this to that, I think, but do you think in a weird way it’s a little bit the same?”

Yes, that was a real quote that Tom delivered in the middle of an interview. He compared the blowback from Scandoval to the murder of George Floyd. As expected, he soon apologized for the comment, albeit pathetically. But that wasn’t the only thing Tom told his interviewer.

Tom Sandoval compares hate to Danny Masterson

While Tom’s George Floyd comment was making headlines at almost every publication, another one of his comments flew under the radar. In the same interview with The New York Times, Tom said, “I feel like I got more hate than Danny Masterson, and he’s a convicted rapist.” It perhaps wasn’t quite as severe as the Floyd comparison, but arguably just as baffling.

What goes on in Tom’s head that he feels the need to put himself in some strange competition with Danny Masterson? Why would he even speak of himself and Danny Masterson in the same sentence? It’s not even audacious, it’s just stupid.

The NYT reporter, Irina Aleksander, hit the nail on the head by saying, “He was trying to express the oddity of becoming the symbolic center of a nationwide discussion and a major news story. What he communicated instead was something more honest, which is just how much the experience had made him lose perspective.”

Interestingly, Aleksander met with Tom more than once, even after Tom’s outrageously ignorant comments. However, Bravo didn’t want it that way. The production company asked Aleksander not to attend a confessional taping the next day. The next time she was able to sit with Tom again, a Bravo publicist and senior NBCUniversal executive sat with them.

Perhaps even more interestingly, Tom’s PR assistant who was present for the first round of the interview didn’t bat an eye at the Masterson comment.

Vanderpump Rules Season 11 continues Tuesdays at 8/7c on Bravo.
