Patricia Altschul has spent 10 seasons as the matriarch of Southern Charm. She looks over the crew of Peter Pans and Southern Belles like a fabulous mother figure who’s always a little disappointed. Of course, she’s the real mother of the show’s star/producer Whitney Sudler-Smith.
Whitney and Patricia’s dynamic on Southern Charm has always added to the goofiness of the show. Whitney is a 56-year-old man who lives at home with his mom in her fabulous mansion full of Pomeranians and butlers. However, back in 2019, Patricia had apparently thought Whitney was on track to settle down with a wife and kids. What a novel idea that would be.

During the 2019 interview with Bravo’s The Daily Dish, Patricia reflected on her dynamic with her only son. “I’m sure I’ve spoiled him, but I don’t care. He’s turned out, for me, to be a kind, loving — and he works,” Patricia said. “In relation to Southern Charm, I’d like to emphasize, because not all of the cast members are, you know, cavorting and debauching all the time. He literally has always worked, and we’ve always been close.” Was she throwing shade at Shep Rose here about working? The irony.
At the time of the interview, Patricia said she’s seen a “change in him recently.” “He’s talked more about settling down because his career has really taken off, you know,” she explained. “Before, he was doing documentaries, and it was feast or famine. But now, I mean, he has these three shows on television. He’s working on two more. He just did some big deal in China. So, I think he’s comfortable with the career stability this time.” Five years later and Whitney is still drinking with Shep, making off-color comments to women like Molly O’Connell, and womanizing all over the streets of Charleston. Where is the change, exactly?
