Mary Cosby has been slaying Season 6 of The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City. She is engaged, funny, and vulnerable. However, that doesn’t erase the rumors swirling around her and her church, Faith Temple Pentecostal.
Recently, a documentary, The Cult of The Real Housewife, premiered on TLC. It took a deep dive into Mary and her husband, Robert Cosby Sr.’s, church. The allegations are not new to viewers of RHOSLC. During Season 2 of the franchise, rumors swirled that Mary was allegedly running a cult. However, Mary stepped away after missing the Season 2 RHOSLC reunion, before returning for Season 4.
The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City caught Elli Hakami and Julian P. Hobbs’ attention
The directors of the docuseries, Julian P. Hobbs and Elli Hakami, credited RHOSLC for bringing the allegations about Mary to light. “They arrived there before we arrived there,” Julian told The Hollywood Reporter. “Then we thought, ‘All right, let’s stress test this. Let’s dig deeper than just letting the series itself answer this question.’”
Allegations in the TLC series include claims that Mary and Robert Sr., pressured members to give “heave offerings.” Reportedly, these monies funded the couple’s lavish lifestyle. Another claim addressed in the series is that Mary allegedly had an affair with the late Cameron Williams, who claimed to have given Mary and her husband approximately $300,000. Cameron appeared in RHOSLC and hinted at what was going on behind the doors of Faith Temple Pentecostal.
“It’s when Mary Cosby appeared on Real Housewives as this diva, this wealthy spiritual figure, that was a bridge too far for a lot of people,” Julian explained. “They’re like, ‘No, no, no. We have to let people know the reality of what our experience was with Mary Cosby, versus the packaged television drama that people were seeing out there.’”
The Hollywood Reporter reached out to both Mary Cosby and Bravo for comment.
The Cult of The Real Housewife is streaming on HBO Max and Discovery+, while The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City continues on Bravo, every Tuesday at 8/7c.
