Nick Viall and wife Natalie Joy put their podcast on the map this past week, and not in a good way. The recent Viall Files episode with Austen Kroll went viral after their appalling line of questioning regarding his late sister. And now one of Austen’s former Southern Charm co-stars is speaking out on the matter.
Austen and his parents tragically lost his sister in 1997. The family was on a hiking trip. His sister, Kyle, who was nine at the time of her passing, fell from a cliff. It’s something the Southern Charm star has spoken about on the show.
Austen Kroll’s appearance on The Viall Files led to controversy
Nick and Natalie’s morbid questions on Kyle’s passing got the attention of Southern Charm alum Cameron Eubanks. She posted her support for Austen on social media.
“I hope a sincere apology will be issued. Austen and his family are some of the kindest people I know,” Cameron wrote on her Instagram page.
So far, it’s quiet from Nick and Natalie Joy. Perhaps they were not prepared for the backlash online. Many posted their outrage in the days since the interview aired. But the podcasting couple shouldn’t be surprised when they pose insensitive questions such as the following gem from Natalie Joy.
“Quickly jumping out of Southern Charm, I’m sure we’re gonna jump right back into it, but going into your childhood, I didn’t know this about your sister passing at 9,” Natalie introduced the topic.
“What was this cliff?” she asked a visible upset Austen. She also wanted to know how old the Bravolebrity was when his sister passed away. The Southern Charm star’s leg started shaking at one point as the cringe-worthy interview continued.
Nick posed the following “weird question.” At one point he said, “what is your younger sister’s relationship with your sister who passed? In a kind of almost spiritual way?”
As for Cameron’s involvement, it speaks for itself. The Southern Charm alum is protective of her friends from the show, despite having quit in 2020. Hopefully, Austen and his family get the apology they deserve.
Catch Southern Charm Wednesdays at 9/8c on Bravo. It streams on Peacock.
