Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s Parenting Style Detailed by Source

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are notoriously private about their two children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet. As a result, royal fans know very little about how the Sussexes parent their kids … but now, a source has shared some insight.

Just one day after little Archie turned seven, an insider spoke to PEOPLE about how he – and his sister – are being raised by the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.

“They give their kids space to be themselves — for their different personalities to flourish,” the source said. “After growing up so publicly, that was really important to Harry.”

Arguably, this parenting style should come as no surprise. Harry has been very vocal about his own upbringing and the negative impact of being in the public eye. It’s one of the reasons that he and Meghan stepped back from life as working royals and moved to California.

Describing what it was like growing up with the paparazzi following his every move, Harry previously said on the Armchair Expert podcast that it was “a mix between The Truman Show and being in a zoo.”

“The biggest issue for me was that being born into it, you inherit the risk. You inherit the risk that comes with it,” he said of being a royal. “You inherit every element of it without choice. And because of the way that the UK media are, they feel an ownership over you.”

To that end, Harry wanted to give his kids a better life – something he thinks all parents ought to do. “I see parenting evolving,” he said during a Q&A at a charity engagement during his recent tour of Australia. “Even if you had the best upbringing in the world, the best parenting in the world, there’s still room for improvement.”

“Our kids are our upgrade,” he went on.
