As much as 39% of adult American Republicans believe that 79-year-old Donald Trump would be able to beat them in a fight. The question arose after the President asked an eight-year-old boy, “You think you could take me in a fight?” at a White House event about physical fitness. The answer about whether they could beat Trump in a fight largely depended on whether the person answering was a Democrat or a Republican.
Republicans answer if Trump can beat them in a ‘fight’
Shortly after President Donald Trump asked a boy at a White House event about physical fitness if he could beat Trump in a physical fight, YouGov decided to conduct a survey about this question. They asked 2,609 Americans three questions. The questions asked whether an eight-year-old boy, a typical American, and they themselves could win a physical fight with Trump.
The answers varied sharply based on the respondents’ political beliefs and stances.
66% of U.S. adults said that a typical American would beat Trump, while 10% say Trump would win the brawl.
Almost all Democrats say they could win a fight with Trump. 75% said they would win compared to 5% who said Trump would win. But Republicans had a very different take on the matter. 33% of Republicans said they would win against Trump, while 39% of Republicans said they would lose.
Moreover, 54% of Democrats said an eight-year-old boy would beat Donald Trump compared to 33% of Republicans who think the same.
Interestingly, while gender usually serves as a big variable in questions like these, for fighting Trump, it varies more with party identification than with gender. For instance, 82% of Democratic men and 71% of Democratic women say they could beat Trump, but only 46% of Republican men say they could beat the President.
Back during a 2024 survey, Americans thought more highly of Trump’s win probability for an arm-wrestling contest with former President Joe Biden.
