A new royal book claims that ex-Prince Andrew had very particular dietary requests at the breakfast table, along with a hard rule about garlic. An excerpt from Andrew Lownie’s upcoming exposé, “Entitled: The Rise and Fall of the House of York,” the former Prince’s special dietary requests were surprisingly extensive — and the book, out on 21 May, shares a memory from an official who arranged an overseas visit years ago. The account details what Andrew “does and doesn’t eat.”
Ex-Prince Andrew ‘never ate garlic,’ claims royal author in upcoming book, per report
HELLO! Magazine shared that in Andrew Lownie’s excerpt, he reveals ex-Prince Andrew’s unusual dietary requests. Lownie writes, “According to one official, who arranged a visit to a Middle East country in 2008, Andrew made clear ‘what he does and doesn’t eat,'” claiming, “I heard he liked prunes for breakfast, and another post went to some trouble to ship some in, as they weren’t available locally.” Moreover, Andrew allegedly “never ate garlic.”
The garlic aversion reportedly comes straight from Andrew’s mother, Queen Elizabeth II, who famously banned the ingredient from palace kitchens to avoid bad breath during public engagements. Queen Camilla confirmed as much during a 2018 appearance on MasterChef Australia, “Garlic is a no-no.”
However, Princess Eugenie has reportedly broken with family tradition, admitting on the Table Manners podcast that garlic and onions are regulars on her weekly Waitrose order. She also added that at her parents’ house, Andrew and Sarah Ferguson’s former residence in Windsor, she was “not allowed” to have either onion or garlic, confirming the family’s fear of bad breath.
These days, the former Prince’s dining table looks rather different. Ex-Prince Andrew now lives in a modest five-bedroom farmhouse, the Marsh Farm, on the Sandringham estate, miles from the grand Royal Lodge he once called home but whether his dietary requests are still a priority is not public knowledge.
