Meghan Markle Tells Kids Why Prince Harry’s Anniversary Gift Means So Much

Prince Harry got a penguin statue for Meghan Markle as their eighth wedding anniversary gift, and the Duchess of Sussex could not help but rave about it to their kids. Markle, celebrating eight years of marriage to Harry, posted a series of videos and photos on her Instagram Stories, showing the couple’s Montecito kitchen filling up with cake and kisses. And still, it was the bronze penguin statue that stole the show.

Meghan Markle’s kids learn story behind Prince Harry’s penguin statue anniversary gift

As Meghan Markle explained to her kids, the significance of the penguin statue as an anniversary gift goes back to her and Prince Harry’s engagement.

The duchess uncovered a big bronze sculpture of two penguins hugging, and she gasped. As Harry chuckled behind the camera, his wife said, “What? Oh, my God,” and immediately spotted a photograph on the side — a mirror selfie of her and the duke from years ago, both dressed in penguin onesies.

Holding that photograph, Markle told the kids, Archie and Lilibet, “This is when Mama and Papa, when we — when we got engaged, we had a party with all of our friends, and we said everyone wear an animal onesie, and we were penguins.” She beamed, “We were penguins because we’re together for life,” and after sharing the sweet history, Markle kissed Harry.

In addition to this sweet moment, her first video showed the duke and their kids singing “Happy Anniversary” as he carried a candlelit cake and led with “Happy Anniversary to Mama.” The little ones chimed in, while Markle added, “And to Papa.”

In the next video, Markle said, “I love you,” to her husband, and the couple kissed over the dessert, and one of the kids demanded, “Blow them! Blow them!” Harry obliged, and a round of cheers and applause filled the room.

Another Instagram Story featured a lemon elderflower cake, the same flavor London pastry chef Claire Ptak created for their 2018 royal wedding reception. Additionally, another Story showed the statue again, this time with a card placed before it reading, “The One And Only,” and a final photo showed the mirror selfie with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle grinning in their penguin onesies.
