Meghan Markle’s Selfie With Controversial Politician Gets Rep’s Response

Meghan Markle’s trip to Switzerland was meant to be all about a global child safety campaign. But it has instead put her in the middle of a mess over a selfie with the far-right politician, Wille Rydman. The Duchess of Sussex travelled to Geneva to launch The Lost Screen Memorial on May 17.

Dressed in a black Giorgio Armani suit, Markle stood before grieving families and global health officials, calling online harm a “public health issue.” But a photo of her smiling beside Finland’s minister for social affairs and health put her in the spotlight for all the wrong reasons — and now, her rep is speaking up.

Meghan Markle’s spokesperson claims she didn’t know of politician Wille Rydman amid controversial selfie

Wille Rydman, the titular politician, posted the selfie with Meghan Markle on social media, with the caption, “A dinner with Meghan.” Immediately, followers pointed to his controversial history. They drew a contrast between Meghan Markle’s speech about protecting children and a grinning photo with a man in the middle of scandals, which triggered major backlash online, with critics calling her a hypocrite.

A spokesperson for the Duchess has now come to the rescue, telling the Mirror, “To be absolutely clear, the Duchess does not know Mr Rydman, had no prior awareness of him attending the event, and was unfamiliar with the concerning reports relating to him.” The rep also claimed, “As is often the case at public engagements, and where time permits, the Duchess politely obliges such requests.” And so, they added, “Understandably, vetting the background of every person who asks for a selfie is not possible.”

Meghan Markle’s representative’s explanation has not silenced critics — but it did draw a clear line between a chance photo and an endorsement — and now, the whole episode is a reminder of how quickly a selfie with a politician can lead to controversy. Markle went to Geneva to mourn young victims and push leaders to act, but it ignited questions that her team is now answering.
