Meghan Markle is facing another storm of royal backlash, following being bashed for posting daughter Lilibet’s photo. The Duchess of Sussex, who marked her eighth wedding anniversary with Prince Harry recently, got slammed over the launch of an anniversary candle on their wedding day.
Meghan Markle’s expensive As Ever candle to mark her anniversary with Prince Harry sparks criticism
On May 19, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex celebrated their eight years of marriage with two Instagram carousel posts featuring 24 unseen photos of the couple.
Following the personal posts, the 44-year-old Markle launched a $64 anniversary candle, named ‘519, through her lifestyle brand As Ever. The detail appeared as a reference to the couple’s 2018 royal wedding, which took place at St George’s Chapel in Windsor. The caption read, “The feeling of warm sunshine and blue skies, surrounded by love and laughter. Celebrating 8 years of our founder @meghan and Prince Harry’s love story.”
However, the couple soon came under fire. The internet quickly called them out for stepping back from royal duties but still leaning on royal branding. One of many wrote on X, “Well considering Megsy has merched their entire relationship. Just add a candle.” Another netizen commented on X, “How lovely — nothing says ‘cherishing a private moment’ quite like turning your wedding anniversary into a product launch. One does wonder what’s left to monetise.” While one more wrote, “Of course she will, everything else gets (merchandised), why not the anniversary of ‘that spectacle.’”
Exclusively speaking to People in March 2025, Meghan mentioned that she didn’t identify as an influencer. She said, “I see myself as an entrepreneur and a female founder.” The website of As Ever, which has become central to Markle’s business journey, states that it is “more than a brand – it’s a love language.”
