Donald Trump hosted IndyCar drivers for a Freedom 250 Grand Prix
On July 13, Donald Trump hosted several top IndyCar racers for a special showcase event at the White House for the upcoming Freedom 250 Grand Prix. The race is scheduled to take place on August 22 and 23 at a temporary street circuit around the National Mall, Washington, D.C. This special Grand Prix will serve as the fifteenth round of the 2026 IndyCar Series.
IndyCar stars Alex Palou, Felix Rosenqvist, and David Malukas attended the event. Also present were Penske founder Roger Penske, Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy, Penske Corporation President Bud Denker, Fox Sports CEO Eric Shanks, and General Motors President Mark Reuss.
At one point during the event, a pit crew showcased a quick tire change for the audience. An IndyCar drove around Pennsylvania Avenue as well. Trump touted the upcoming Freedom 250 Grand Prix, saying, “This will be like no other race ever… This will get the highest ratings of any such race.”
The president added, “You’re going to see cars at the level they’ve never been at before, with cars racing more than 190 miles, and even higher than that, down Pennsylvania Avenue. It wasn’t exactly designed for that, but what Sean Duffy’s done with these incredible, brilliant people is really amazing.”
Trump also announced that the race would be “totally free” to viewers across the nation. “It’s going to be a beautiful, a beautiful thing to watch, and this is the first racing event of its kind in Washington, D.C., history, happening as part of our great celebration of the 250th anniversary of American freedom,” the president added.
According to the event’s official website, the race is “supported by a group of key partners.” It includes IndyCar’s “promotional alliance with Monumental Sports & Entertainment (MSE).” However, it remains unclear if federal funding is involved.
