The Duchess of Sussex, who recently turned 45, has reportedly avoided being addressed as “Your Royal Highness” in the past. Prince Harry and his wife were no longer permitted to use their HRH titles after stepping down as working royals.

Meghan Markle reportedly had a three-word demand about her royal title. Scott Moore, appointed chief executive of Invictus Games Vancouver Whistler 2025, told the Daily Mail (via the Express) an anecdote. He opened up about his first encounter with the Duchess of Sussex and Prince Harry at a “One Year To Go” event. Moore said he wanted to be clear about how to address the couple.
Therefore, he asked the Sussex team to find the right answer. “Ma’am is fine,” he was told regarding Markle’s title, and for Harry, it was “Sir.” According to the outlet, the royal family members are often addressed as “His/Her Royal Highness,” followed by “Sir/Ma’am.”
Reportedly, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have not been working royals since 2020, which meant they were stripped of their HRH titles. Although they became Duke and Duchess of Sussex, their appropriate formal titles are now Sir and Ma’am.
Lately, the Suits alum has been drawing attention due to her Duchess title. Last month, Markle made a guest appearance on “MasterChef Australia” as a judge for one episode.
During her introduction segment, judge Poh Ling Yeow said, “We’ve had MasterChef royalty in the kitchen before, but no one like this… please welcome to MasterChef Australia… the Duchess of Sussex, Meghan Markle!”
Once she joined the panel, Yeow asked her preference of how they should address her. She replied, “Oh, call me Meghan.” This simple request sparked debate online as netizens seemingly questioned her about using the Duchess title as a non-working royal.
