Chrissy Metz Defends Using GLP-1 Drugs After Being a Major Skeptic

Chrissy Metz has shared details about her decision to try a GLP-1 medication. The 45-year-old, who rose to fame on NBC’s hit series This Is Us, said after years of trying unsuccessful diets, she just “wanted to take care of” herself.

Chrissy Metz admits she was very skeptical of GLP1 weight loss medications for six years

Speaking about her years-long weight loss journey, Metz told People, “I’m not getting any younger.” “I’m in perimenopause, and there were obesity issues within my family and with my father, and I felt like I’ve tried so many modalities, whether it was diets or therapy, and none of it really worked for me,” the actress explained.

Metz admitted she was skeptical about GLP-1s for six years, as reported by E! News. She worried they wouldn’t work for her and could come with unpleasant side effects. But after giving them a try, she said her experience has been positive so far.

The actress, who is also known for her roles in American Horror Story: Freak Show, My Name is Earl and Entourage, said her experience with the medication has been “great,” adding that she has enjoyed benefits she never expected. She admitted she was resistant to taking the medication, believing it wouldn’t work for her. However, she eventually realized that “food noise” was a real issue that consumed much of her headspace.

“It’s so nice not to be obsessing about what I’m going to have every minute, even as I’m still consuming the meal. I just vilified food for so long because I was taught that it was bad, and you shouldn’t eat this or that. And it’s been helping me be more mobile and have less joint pain and inflammation, and run around onstage [Metz is currently in Broadway’s & Juliet], and just do things that would have been much more difficult several pounds and inches ago,” Metz explained.

Metz says she has learned over the years to ignore her critics. She believes their opinions don’t matter because they are not part of her life, her doctor’s notes or the hereditary health issues in her family. She said she has to do what is best for herself, which includes ignoring negative comments and surrounding herself with people who are positive and kind.

Metz previously opened up about her weight in a 2017 interview with The Hollywood Reporter, saying she was “born chubby.” She explained that concerns about her weight began at an early age. While her friends could eat whatever they wanted, Metz said she knew certain foods could cause her to gain weight. “I had to be really cognizant of what I ate,” she added.
