Barack Obama’s most talked-about presidential outfit has found a new punchline more than a decade after it became a political talking point. An HBO comedy now imagines that Larry David, not Obama’s own fashion instincts, helped put the former president in the tan suit that caused such a stir.

The joke appears in the finale of Life, Larry, and the Pursuit of Unhappiness, where Barack Obama appears as himself while David plays a fictional White House adviser. The seven-part series revisits moments from American history with plenty of comedic license, and this time it turns one of Obama’s strangest wardrobe controversies into a David-style disaster.
The episode recreates the period around Obama’s Aug. 28, 2014 news conference concerning U.S. efforts against ISIS in Syria. In the comedy’s version of events, David accidentally ruins a dark suit Obama planned to wear after sneaking a sip from a smoothie.
With the original outfit out of commission, David points Obama toward the tan alternative and pitches it as a casual choice. “I think you should wear the tan suit to the press conference,” David said in the episode (via PEOPLE).
David then doubles down after Obama puts it on, telling him it looks “prettay good” before joking that people will remember the outfit for a “long, long time.” The gag gives the infamous suit a completely fictional backstory while sending up the intense reaction that followed its real-world debut.
The actual controversy erupted when critics complained that Obama’s clothing looked too relaxed for a presidential appearance. Some called the choice inappropriate or lacking gravitas, even though other presidents, including Ronald Reagan and Bill Clinton, had previously worn tan suits.
Executive producer Ethan Lewis told Variety that revisiting the episode of presidential fashion history had been a personal goal. “My dream was to close the book on the tan suit,” Lewis said. Co-creator Jeff Schaffer also praised Obama’s performance, calling the experience one of the coolest opportunities he had received.
Obama has laughed at the fashion saga himself. In 2024, he posted a comparison featuring his old look alongside Kamala Harris wearing a similar tan ensemble, joking that the style remained strong a decade later.
