Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s reported return to Britain could bring a major change for their children. Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet are expected to start school in the U.K. this September, beginning their first experience with British education after spending most of their young lives in California.
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s reported UK move might come with a major schooling change for Archie and Lilibet
The reported move would shift the family’s day-to-day life across the Atlantic after six years in Montecito. Archie, 7, and Lilibet, 5, previously attended school near the Sussexes’ California home. Their new school has not been identified, and the family also plans to keep its new private residence away from public attention (via PEOPLE).
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle do not intend to move onto royal property. Instead, they reportedly plan to set up an independent home while keeping their roughly $14 million, nine-bedroom Montecito house. The arrangement would give the family a British base without returning to an official royal residence.
The children’s schooling also shows how unusual their connection to Britain has been since the Sussexes left royal duties. Archie was born in the U.K. in 2019 and lived at Frogmore Cottage as a baby, while Lilibet arrived in California in 2021. Neither child has previously attended school in Harry’s home country.
Their relationship with Britain has remained limited. The children visited in 2022 for Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee, and Lilibet celebrated her first birthday at Frogmore Cottage. This summer, however, the family returned together and met King Charles III and Queen Camilla at Highgrove House. The gathering marked the first time Charles had seen Archie and Lilibet in more than four years.
The reported relocation follows years of arguments surrounding Harry’s security arrangements in Britain. The couple has not publicly confirmed the move, and a spokesperson declined to comment on security matters. Still, the children’s reported schooling plans suggest the family could spend considerably more time in the U.K.
Meghan has previously discussed helping children handle school transitions. Speaking with PEOPLE last year, she recommended small surprises in a child’s backpack during the first week, noting that the return to school can bring “big feelings.”
