It was a total girls’ fest when Meghan Markle invited two of her closest friends to a wreath-making party. Cameras captured all the giggles, as well as the bond between Meghan, Lindsay Jill Roth, and Kelly McKee. The Duchess’ longtime friends were there to film her Netflix holiday special: With Love, Meghan: Holiday Celebration.
As soon as Lindsay walked onto the set, she felt more like she was attending a family holiday gathering, rather than participating in a TV production. According to Jill, the best surprise was something that wasn’t seen on-camera.
Lindsay Jill Roth revealed an off-camera surprise
“The vibe was amazing,” Jill told People. When she arrived, Meghan was already filming, but she got “a big hug” from both the makeup artist and the photographer, both of whom she’s know for years. And when she spotted Kelly, “It instantly felt like a family day. So warm, so fun, so easy. We were just ourselves.”
Jill and Meghan have known each other for over 25 years. They first met at college, in a Toni Morrison literature class. Even though they’ve taken different paths through life, they’ve remained close all these years.
“We laugh a lot,” Jill added. “There’s just always been that level of support for each other. When you find someone that you are just 100% yourself with, it’s rare.”
While the three friends were elbows deep in wreath-making, Jill looked up to spot Prince Harry with the couple’s two children off-camera. Prince Archie, 6, and Princess Lilibet, 4, were not filmed, but they were very excited to be part of the show behind the scenes.
“I don’t get to see them all the time now,” Jill said. “Getting to see [Archie] and give him big cuddles and give Harry a big hug and just have a few moments with them was such a nice surprise.”
Though the younger royals were never shown on camera, the Duke of Sussex does make a cameo in the special. As Meghan prepared her mom Doria Ragland’s traditional Christmas Eve gumbo, Harry suggested that he actually preferred his mother-in-law’s version. Though Meghan at first pretended to be insulted, she later admitted that her mother would appreciate the compliment.
