Tom Cruise is a creative force to be reckoned with. In a new development, the megastar has added another remarkable skill to his resume: that of a camera operator. The 63-year-old actor wound up filming a lightsaber sequence during the production of Star Wars: Starfighter.
Tom Cruise takes up surprise role for major project
Tom Cruise has added another feather to his cap, that of a camera operator. Director Shawn Levy shared an interesting anecdote from the filming of Star Wars: Starfighter. Levy revealed to Calum Marsh that Cruise unexpectedly became part of a lightsaber duel sequence (via The New York Times).
The Top Gun star landed on set with the intention of merely observing the filming of the movie. At the time, Levy was staging an intense lightsaber duel in a muddy pond. The director invited Cruise to handle one of the cameras. Levy might have suggested in jest, but the Hollywood megastar took it very seriously. Cruise waded into ankle-deep water, handling the camera like a thorough professional.
Levy quipped, “Last week, Steven Spielberg was here. And now Tom Cruise is wielding a camera, ruining his very nice shoes.” Moreover, he revealed that fans would be pleased to learn that Cruise reportedly shot one of the film’s best sequences. Levy added, “Now, when you see the movie, you’ll know that part of it was shot by Tom. I mean, how cool is that?”
Notably, fans are not familiar with many details about the new Star Wars film, except that it is an original entry in the renowned franchise. Ryan Gosling headlines the high-profile movie. According to reports, it has no direct connection to the Skywalker movies (via Variety).
Levy had previously revealed (via Complex), “This is a standalone. It’s not a prequel, not a sequel.” He confirmed it’s a “new adventure and set in a period of time that we haven’t seen explored yet.”
Ryan Gosling stars alongside Matt Smith, Amy Adams, Mia Goth, and Aaron Pierre, among others. Jonathan Tropper, known for Banshee and Warrior, has penned the screenplay for the movie.
