Princess Charlotte Won’t Wear a Tiara Due to This Historic Rule

What’s the point of being a princess if you can’t sport a glittering tiara? Well, Princess Charlotte will reportedly have to put up with an unadorned head for quite a while longer. According to royal tradition, she needs to wait for two very specific events before she gets to rock the jewels.

She may be third in line for the throne, but royal tradition doesn’t allow Charlotte to wear a tiara yet. A centuries-old custom means it will be years before the 10-year-old gets her hands on one, royal experts told Radar Online.

Under the custom, women in the royal family must reach adulthood or marry. It’s not a hard and fast rule, but rather a deeply ingrained convention – and we know how much the royal family loves those.

Most women in the monarchy get to wear their first tiara on their wedding day. Charlotte’s mom, Kate Middleton, followed that custom when she donned the Cartier Halo tiara when she tied the knot with Prince William in 2011. While Princess Kate is reportedly planning to ditch a number of royal traditions, this one will probably stick around.

As for Charlotte’s future as a working royal, she is said to be getting advice from Princess Anne. An insider told RO: “Anne’s involvement goes far beyond teaching protocol or ceremony. She has been helping Charlotte understand the social mechanics of royal life, how to begin a conversation with warmth, how to close it politely, and how to move on without causing offense. It is a skill her mother Kate had to acquire over time, but Charlotte has grown up surrounded by those cues and reads them instinctively.”
