QB Justin Fields on Why He Joined the Chiefs

Justin Fields has opened up about why he joined the Kansas City Chiefs. Every NFL offseason has moments when the league takes notice as rosters shift and big stars settle into new jerseys. For one of the most dynamic young quarterbacks, that moment has arrived as his next chapter begins under Arrowhead’s lights. Fields recently discussed his reasoning for the move.

Justin Fields reveals why he decided to come to the Chiefs

Justin Fields has opened up about the factors that drew him to Kansas City, explaining why the Chiefs were the right fit. The newcomer said that joining the Kansas City Chiefs was partly about learning from Patrick Mahomes, despite the star quarterback’s ongoing knee rehab.

“I wanted to come here because of the [Chiefs’] culture, because of Pat and to learn from him and Coach [Andy] Reid,” he said on Tuesday, per ESPN. “Just the winning, to be honest.”

Fields shared that they knew of each other before Kansas City but hadn’t talked much. He further added that he is excited to learn from Mahomes now and is already asking him questions and watching how he handles meetings and practice. Working with Coach Reid and the offensive staff is another big draw for him, and he’s eager to get to work with the entire offense.

Patrick Mahomes is working back from the biggest injury of his nine-year career, having undergone surgery in December for a torn ACL and LCL in his left knee. Despite this, Fields noted that whether Mahomes is ready for Week 1 or not, the quarterback room gives him a chance to learn plenty from his new teammate. Whether he starts or serves as a backup, he plans to approach every day the same way.

Kansas City acquired Justin Fields, a five-year veteran, from the New York Jets in a trade last month. As part of the agreement, the Jets will pay $7 million of Fields’ $10 million guaranteed 2026 salary, and the Chiefs will pay the other $3 million.
