Donald Trump Has Unexpected Reaction to Iran’s Peace Proposal, Official Says

According to US officials, Donald Trump isn’t pleased with Iran’s peace proposal as his administration continues to review it. He also met with his top security advisors on Monday to discuss the proposal to end the conflict. This happened after Iran sent messages via Pakistan about their conditions. These included reopening the Strait of Hormuz and avoiding nuclear issues until the war ends.

Donald Trump ‘not happy’ with Iran proposal, state US official

Officials told Reuters that Donald Trump is not happy with Iran’s peace proposal. This is because it doesn’t meet some of the US demands, including discussing nuclear issues right away. However, Iran clearly states that it first wants to end the conflict. The country wishes to resolve issues regarding the reopening of Hormuz before entering nuclear program talks. But Trump is not pleased with this condition. He believes that discussions on nuclear issues should be initiated immediately.

Earlier, Secretary of State Marco Rubio shared on whether the proposal closely matches the expectations of what the US is looking for to end the conflict. He revealed that the peace proposal is better than what they expected Iran to submit. “We have to ensure that any deal that is made, any agreement that is made, is one that definitively prevents them from sprinting towards a nuclear weapon at any point,” he added.

In 2015, Iran and other countries (including the US) were involved in a deal limiting Iran’s nuclear program, which it claimed was only for peaceful purposes. However, the deal collapsed when Trump withdrew from it in his first term.

Amid the proposal review, the UN warned that the Strait of Hormuz must be reopened immediately. Failure to do so could have severe global consequences. In a joint statement led by Bahrain, the UN wrote, “These pressures are cascading into empty fuel tanks, empty shelves, and empty plates. I appeal to the parties: open the strait; let ships pass; no tolls, no discrimination; let trade resume; let the global economy breathe.”
