Why In The City Viewers Are Mad at Amanda Batula

Fans are not happy with Amanda Batula. And June 23rd’s episode of In The City failed to help her case. In this episode, Kyle Cooke went out and partied the night before Amanda officially moved out of their apartment. Even still, the way Amanda responded to his apparent lack of care had viewers heavily side-eyeing her instead.

For years, Amanda begged Kyle to live a domesticated life at her side, but out Kyle still went, only to return home either blackout drunk or chaotic, at best. Naturally, their marriage started cracking. Not helping his case, the way Kyle spoke to Amanda was often really awful, especially when drunk, and his flirty behaviors were not exactly great either. So, for many Summer House seasons, fans heavily sided with Amanda.

However, things are different over on their spin-off series, In The City. In this series, Amanda and Kyle are starting to move forward following their separation. Yet, Amanda’s interactions with her estranged husband remain stuck in their “not fun” past. And because of this, Amanda is now catching a lot of heat from the fans.

In the final moments of Episode 5, Amanda moved out of the apartment she once shared with Kyle. The night before her big move, however, Kyle refused to stay home and help her pack. Instead, he went out. And then, he brought “strangers back to [their] home while [she was asleep],” she accused.

Furthermore, Amanda continued, “I was getting emotional last night thinking about how it was going to be our last night in the apartment together. And you do the one thing you know pisses me off, which is coming back late.” But Kyle argued back, reminding Amanda that she had spent the weekend smoking. “You didn’t do anything,” he reasoned, and “We had plans.”

Amanda failed to own that. Instead, she called Kyle out again this week, accusing him of bringing “fans” over during her last night in their apartment. Kyle clarified that, saying these two people were “very nice,” and he actually shared a mutual friend with them. Still, Amanda labeled his behavior as “crazy.”

As Amanda explained, she just wanted her husband to come home. She also did not want to “see something on the internet about him the next day.” But, as fans saw in Episode 6, there were several reasons why Kyle purposely checked out of this storyline.

Kyle admitted to “disrespecting” their marriage

Amanda initiated her move-out. Kyle had no say in it. So, as he confessed to a producer this week in Episode 6, his behaviors were a direct result of not knowing how to respond. He said, “Her last night in our home, being a night that I just stayed out and kind of disrespected our marriage, was kind of like a knee-jerk reaction to just not knowing how to process this and, quite frankly, be around it.”

Then, viewers saw a flashback conversation Kyle had with several of his male costars. In this chat, Kyle explained that he had been on “the most stressful investor calls ever” for Loverboy while Amanda was packing and moving. These calls prevented him from helping her with her last-minute packing. So, in his mind, Amanda was “pissed off” for two reasons.

The first was because he “wasn’t able to help” her. The second was that he “went out” the night before she moved. “I just feel guilty because she basically left in tears,” Kyle admitted to his friends.

Several beats later, Kyle told Amanda that he “felt horrible about how [things] left off” between them. He also owned his behavior. Nevertheless, Amanda still decided to bring up his past, and that left fans seeing red.

Kyle admitted that he “acted out.” He felt bad. But instead of hearing him out, Amanda clocked him again, noting that he had “been acting out for 10 years.” She then asked, “Were you acting out when you cheated on me and had sex with someone else? Was that acting out?”

Kyle kept his cool, though, explaining that he cheated on her “almost 10 years” ago, when he was “younger and scared to commit.” But Amanda interjected, saying, “Yeah, and nothing’s changed. That’s what I have a problem with.” At this point, Kyle realized, he would “never live [this] down” with Amanda.

Regardless, Kyle tried to reason, saying, “If you literally hold everything over my head…” but Amanda cut him off. “It’s hard to put the past behind us when you keep doing the same sh*t,” she explained, referring to his night out on the town right before her big move. And this is when Amanda seemingly lost the plot, as fans quickly flocked to Reddit to discuss her “tense conversation” with Kyle.

“She is still bringing up his cheating from before they got married,” one of the first posters said. Another Redditor agreed. She uses it as a get-out-of-jail-free card.” And she does so “For every conversation, always,” a third fan added.

Amanda even deflects in irrelevant times, viewers said. “He’ll talk about how her sloppy/messy/clutter bothers him, and she’ll be like, ‘I’m only like this because you cheated on me.’” So, can Amanda make things right with the fans? Only time will tell.
