John Cena Hints at ‘History-Making’ Reveal at WWE Backlash

WWE Backlash has always been a night where legacies are tested and moments are carved into wrestling history. But this year, the energy felt different the second John Cena stepped through the curtain. With a mic in hand and 20+ years of legacy behind him, Cena made a “history-making” return announcement that instantly redefined WWE Backlash.

John Cena set to return at WWE Backlash

John Cena is preparing to make his long-awaited return at WWE Backlash. Cena’s last WWE appearance came at WrestleMania 42 in Las Vegas, where he played off Danhausen’s antics and exchanged jabs with The Miz inside the ring. As the official host, the WWE star opened both nights of the event and announced the official attendance numbers to the roaring crowd.

On Monday morning, Cena announced his next official WWE appearance will be at Backlash this weekend. He shared the news on social media after reports surfaced late last week.

“It’s official! I’m headed to Backlash,” he said. “After months of planning and effort, I am so excited to break some history-making news! I can’t promise it’ll be perfect, but I can promise it will change the WWE experience for Superstars and fans! See you live on Saturday in Tampa or at home on the ESPN app!”

The X (formerly Twitter) post sent the WWE Universe into a frenzy, with a fan tweeting, “Hopefully it’s not just hype for publicity.” “Can’t wait to see the history-making news Champ!  C U in Tampa,” commented another. “Can’t fucking wait. I hope I CAN SEE YOU!” joked a wrestling enthusiast.

Having officially retired at the end of last year, the wrestling pro has stated multiple times that he will not return to in-ring competition.

Cena was on a worldwide retirement tour in 2025. He headlined WrestleMania 41 and SummerSlam and secured a record-setting 17th world championship. His final match came in December 2025 at Saturday Night’s Main Event. There, he lost to The Ring General, Gunther, by tapping out. Locked in Gunther’s chokehold, Cena was forced to submit, giving the victory to The Ring General.
