President Donald Trump is reportedly being sued. This is over allegations that his administration dumped contaminated demolition debris at East Potomac Golf Links. It is a public golf course in Washington DC and now, this action threatens its future as an affordable space.
Donald Trump hit with lawsuit over golf course waste dumping, claims report
The suit is led by the DC Preservation League and joined by regular golfers. It claims that hundreds of truckloads of spoil from the White House East Wing demolition and a ballroom project now sit in a large pile between the fourth and ninth holes. Tests conducted on the material found elevated levels of lead, mercury, arsenic, and petroleum by-products, according to court filings.
Plaintiffs claim that suing Donald Trump became necessary after reports surfaced that his administration planned to close the course. The facility had been operated by the National Links Trust. It is a charitable organization with a 50-year contract in 2020 to run Washington’s three public courses. Whereas the Trump administration maintains that the fill material is safe. White House spokeswoman Taylor Rogers framed the project as a revitalization effort.
However, leaked design plans suggest a renovation that would eliminate the two smaller nine-hole courses and a mini-golf attraction currently on site. It would replace them with an elaborate new 18-hole championship layout. Opponents argue this would end East Potomac’s long-standing role as an inclusive venue for players of all skill levels and backgrounds.
Dave Roberts, a regular golfer who joined the lawsuit, told The Times, “In a city where politicians are constantly focused on what separates us, East Potomac is one of the few remaining spaces where no matter who you are, what you do or the state of your game, everyone is welcome and everyone is treated the same. It deserves better than becoming a dumping ground for waste and yet another private playground for the privileged and powerful.”
The preservation group got an early legal win on Monday.
