A production of “The Devil Wears Prada 3” may be up for discussion, but Anne Hathaway is reportedly not rushing into the idea. “The Devil Wears Prada 2” gave the box office a serious jolt this year, pulling in over $445 million worldwide and proving audiences still cannot get enough of Miranda Priestly’s sass. Now, studio executives reportedly want to produce a third film, with Meryl Streep and Emily Blunt seemingly keen to return. But Hathaway allegedly stands squarely in the way of a green light.
Anne Hathaway ‘aware of how quickly audiences can turn’ as she holds up potential Devil Wears Prada 3, claims insider
An insider told Rob Shuter’s Naughty But Nice that Anne Hathaway will not sign off on “The Devil Wears Prada 3” until someone gives her a proper creative reason to do it, because “This isn’t about money for Anne.” As the source explained, Hathaway is “incredibly protective of her career and very aware of how quickly audiences can turn when they feel someone is overexposed.”
Notably, Hathaway weathered brutal public criticism after her Oscar win for “Les Misérables.” Another source suggested that the memory still stings, claiming, “That experience left a lasting mark on her,” adding, “She remembers exactly what it felt like when the public suddenly decided they’d had enough.” And so, Hathaway “never wants to go through that again.”
Executives are reportedly drumming their fingers due to the standoff, mostly because, as an insider noted, “Anne holds all the power because fans won’t accept a Devil Wears Prada movie without Andy Sachs.”
However, “Nobody believes Anne is saying no forever,” and “She just wants a reason to come back that actually matters.” So while the studio would happily start producing “The Devil Wears Prada 3” tomorrow, Anne Hathaway keeps asking, “Why does this story need to exist now?” — and “If nobody can answer that creatively, she’s not interested.”
Hence, right now, the waiting game continues with Streep, Blunt, and the studio reportedly already ready.
