Spencer Pratt, the former star of The Hills, is adding to his security in the wake of death threats. In January 2026, the former reality star announced his candidacy for Mayor of Los Angeles. While he formerly supported the Republican Party, Spencer is running as an independent. And his campaign is picking up steam.
The candidate for Los Angeles mayor has increased security

Spencer is in a heated contest with Karen Bass, the current Mayor of Los Angeles, and city councilwoman Nithya Raman. Meanwhile, Spencer, his wife Heidi Montag, and their two children lost their home in the 2025 L.A. wildfires. In addition, Spencer’s parents also lost their home.
This devastating loss led the reality star to run for mayor. “I’ve waited a whole year for someone to step up and challenge Karen Bass, but I saw no fighters. Guess I’m gonna have to do this myself,” Spencer said when announcing his candidacy.
According to Spencer’s team’s pollster, he could make the runoff election in November. However, Spencer’s increasingly high profile has led to threats against his life. Spencer’s head of security, in an exclusive statement to The Daily Mail, said that the candidate has received “credible threats.”
The statement continued, “In response, we have increased and adjusted his security detail accordingly. We are also working closely with the LAPD to ensure the ongoing safety of Spencer and his family.” The statement concluded, “I will not be providing any further details. Our sole focus is the protection of Spencer and his loved ones – not feeding tabloid speculation.” In addition, the head of Spencer’s security team confirmed that he had spoken to the Los Angeles Police Department in response to the threats.
Meanwhile, Spencer dropped a rap parody video, where he made pointed references to the controversy about whether he was living in an Airstream trailer or staying at the Hotel Bel-Air.
