Prince William has rarely worn a wedding ring in public, and the reason appears simple. A new report framed the choice as “personal preference,” not a royal mystery. The Prince of Wales married Kate Middleton in 2011 at Westminster Abbey.
However, unlike the Princess of Wales, he never planned to exchange or wear a band. The detail resurfaced after questions about Kate’s missing rings in a family photo. Together, those details put William’s choice back in focus.
A new report explains why Prince William does not typically wear a wedding ring
As per HELLO!, the Prince of Wales had already made his decision before the royal wedding. St. James’ Palace announced one month before the ceremony that he would not receive a wedding ring. A palace insider told The Mirror, “He’s not one for jewellery.” The source added, “He’s never worn any,” and said, “It’s all down to personal preference.” Meanwhile, Kate’s office addressed her photo by saying she was “at home.”
Meanwhile, the report noted that royal men have not always followed the same wedding tradition. In 2018, royal commentator Eloise Parker told Marie Claire it was “traditional for royal women” to wear both rings. However, she added it had “never been traditional for royal men to wear one.” Parker said, “That’s why Prince Philip and Prince William don’t wear them.” She also noted, “When you have a wedding watched by millions, everyone knows you’re married.”
However, the custom differs across the family. King Charles has worn a ring, while Prince Harry chose a platinum band for his 2018 wedding to Meghan Markle. HELLO! also cited the palace statement before Harry’s wedding, saying, “Ms. Markle’s ring has been fashioned from a piece of Welsh Gold.” It added, “Prince Harry’s ring will be a Platinum Band with a textured finish.” Kate’s gold band, meanwhile, came from the Clogau St David’s mine in North Wales. She also wears Diana’s sapphire engagement ring at public engagements.
