Dame Dash Says Jay-Z’s Yankee Stadium Concerts Felt More Like Marketing Than Music

Dame Dash feels that Jay Z’s Yankee Stadium shows are all glitter, no gold. The Roc-A-Fella Records co-founder argued that the concerts focused more on selling products than celebrating the occasion.

The shows, staged to mark Reasonable Doubt’s 30th anniversary, were engulfed with merchandise and promotional material, making him skeptical.

Dame Dash explains his criticism of Jay-Z’s Yankee Stadium shows

Speaking on The Art of Dialogue, Dame Dash questioned why the concerts were positioned around the 30th anniversary but contained overwhelming amounts of Yankees branding. TMZ reports that Dame Dash appeared disillusioned with the heavy presence of merchandise, making the concerts feel more like a well-plotted marketing campaign and not a tribute to the rapper’s debut album.

He also pushed for scrutiny into the crowd shots and promotional activations to be part of a larger marketing ploy. However, he added that he had no knowledge either way.

Dash emphasized that the overtly commercial nature of the concerts overshadowed the performances themselves. He also noted that he would like to see something fresh and not an overly polished, nostalgia-driven production.

The music executive also criticized the cinematic opening sequence before the concert, where Beyoncé was shown shaving Jay Z’s head. He found the whole thing thoroughly unconvincing and contrived. He also made a lighthearted comment, saying that he wouldn’t trust his own partner with his hair. The segment clearly brought forced limelight to the couple.

Dame Dash’s comments may not be completely unbiased, especially since he has a long-running feud with him. The pair co-founded Roc-A-Fella Records in the mid-1990s before their relationship deteriorated amid business disputes, leading to years of public disagreements.

According to Pitchfork, Jay-Z’s Yankee Stadium residency celebrated the 30th anniversary of Reasonable Doubt. The shows featured surprise appearances from Beyoncé, Rihanna, Nas, Eminem, Pharrell, and other collaborators, turning the concerts into one of the biggest live music events of the summer.
