Royal author says Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s exit continues to impact the royal family
A royal author, Catherine Mayer, in her recent interview with Fox News Digital, said she believes that the Duke of Sussex and Duchess of Sussex’s distance from the royal family has caused the Crown’s crisis.
Mayer said, “I believe that the rupture in the family that saw Meghan and Harry go to the United States has done very serious damage to the monarchy.”
She added, “But to say that is not to say that I blame them for what happened. It’s often taken as a criticism: ‘Look what they’ve done to the monarchy.’”
She explained that it is painful for everyone and the institution, adding that the monarchy is losing popularity.
The author shared that the Duchess of Sussex had the potential to connect with a young audience in Britain. She said after their exit, “The only ones who can potentially do it are Kate and William, and they’re more of a small ‘c’ conservative in their approach. Harry and Meghan are basically the same age. But they had this appeal, a much broader appeal, and that’s been lost now.”
Mayer said she believes there are major issues in the royal family over the couple. She also claimed Prince William was unaware of the couple’s private meeting with King Charles at Highgrove. Mayer also said that King Charles is softening after their meeting amid the royal rift.
Harry and Markle have been living in California with their kids, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet. They stepped away as senior royals in 2020, citing the lack of support from the royal family and constant British media scrutiny. Prince Harry and Meghan Markle shared their reasons in Harry’s memoir, “Spare.”
