Megyn Kelly has shared new details about a conversation involving Joe Kent and J.D. Vance. The 55-year-old podcast host claimed that Kent described J.D. Vance as “too tainted” for some Republicans.

During the August 5 episode of The Megyn Kelly Show, Kelly weighed in on the issue. She first discussed Tucker Carlson’s reported plans to launch a new political party called America First, reports OK! Magazine.
Carlson and former Georgia Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene had previously announced this new political movement. The group was described as a conservative movement formed by figures who had broken with President Donald Trump in recent months.
According to Kelly, Kent said that he and others urged Carlson to enter the race as their candidate. “And on top of that, when asked by Jen Weiger of the [left-wing news commentary show] Young Turks what this would mean for J.D. Vance, Kent basically said, ‘We like him, but he’s too tainted. He supported the Iran war, and no,'” she added.
Kelly asked her guest, political commentator Mark Halperin, what the development could mean for the Republican Party. The 61-year-old commentator joked that Carlson running for president was highly unlikely.
According to the BBC, Kent left his role as the United States National Counterterrorism Center director on March 17, 2026. He reportedly resigned over disagreements with the Trump administration’s conflict with Iran. Following his resignation, Vice President Vance shared his reaction to the departure of his former intelligence aide. Vance said that neither he nor the president wanted war, adding that the administration had no interest in entering the kind of prolonged conflicts seen in the past, reports The Hill.
