Haven discussed Voight’s reaction during an episode of the All Out with Jon Dean podcast. He said his father called repeatedly before Haven finally answered after about 15 minutes.
Haven recalled Voight saying, “I finally know who you are.” The simple comment reportedly changed the tone of their conversation almost immediately.
Haven described the call as “mind-blowing” and “surreal.” He also said Voight sounded genuinely affirming while discussing his son’s sexuality.
The actor recalled his father saying, “Now I understand why you’ve been so private.” Voight also said he could finally understand Haven’s “entire behavior.”
That reaction carried extra weight because their relationship had endured years of difficulty. Haven revealed that he and Voight “didn’t talk for six years” because he felt a “lack of value” from his father.
“My upbringing was very difficult, and we’ve come a long way,” Haven said during the conversation.
The father and son had already begun repairing their relationship before Haven’s announcement. Haven said they recently reconciled during an hour-long dinner, where Voight acknowledged his mistakes.
Haven, who is Angelina Jolie’s brother, came out publicly during a livestream with his ex-wife Romi Imbelli. He said he once lacked the language needed to explain his feelings.
“Like so many gay kids, I learned to question parts of myself long before I learned to celebrate them,” Haven said during the livestream.
He also shared a message for his family, saying, “I hope my family and others can choose love over fear, understanding over judgment, and connection over the beliefs that may have kept us apart.”
Imbelli said they had waited anxiously for Voight’s reaction after Haven came out. She also described Haven as her “life partner” despite their marriage ending.
For Haven, Voight’s response appeared to mark another step forward after years of family tension. He also announced Safe Haven with James Haven, a weekly podcast exploring the experiences and choices that shaped his life.
