Now and again, charter guests make quite a splash on Below Deck. Such was the case for Bunny McKensie and fellow guests this season on Below Deck Mediterranean. But certain yachties and several fans gave Bunny’s group a little too much heat this week. And this understandably upset Bunny while watching the first part of their charter back on Bravo.
To recap, Bunny, a Black, queer, nonbinary person, and guests had conflicting gluten-free and vegan dietary needs. They also had highly specific food requests during Episode 11. This stretched Joy Lefaucheur thin. In her confessionals, Joy admitted she might “explode soon,” and then she did, crying in the galley after the guests went to bed.
Kayley Smith cried too. She messed up and brought avocado as a topping when watermelon was asked for instead. After watching this episode, Bunny went on Instagram to call out Joy and Kayley. Understandably, Bunny also called out the viewers for their unnecessary and harmful reactions, which Bunny had every right to do.
Below Deck Med Season 11 led to some vicious trolling of Bunny McKensie
On Instagram, Bunny explained, “Within minutes of people watching two crew members cry on the episode, there were people in the comments using racial slurs to describe me. And my infraction? Existing as a Black person on a yacht and kindly asking that my guests receive food they can eat so that they don’t go to bed hungry.” The crew’s reactions also appalled Bunny.
“I was framed by these women as being some sort of horrible person. And that’s not okay. Thankfully, Cooper Dawson chimed in via the comments, admitting the crew “struggled” this week.
Bunny thanked Cooper, but further acknowledged, “The death threats and racism on social, though, in response to how we were portrayed, and Chef and Kayley crying on the show, is so incredibly wrong and messed up.” Fortunately, Joy also appeared in the comments. She owned her mess, not shying away from this conversation.
Regardless, we agree with Bunny for standing ten toes down while explaining, “As Black and Brown people, as LGBTQIA+ people, we get to experience joy. We get to say when something doesn’t work for us” without harmful fan comments and staff responses of “demanding” and “hate” being the go-to responses. Because, as Bunny correctly clocked, “in this political environment,” people can have bad days. But words and actions need to matter.
Below Deck Mediterranean is streaming on Peacock.
