Kathy Hilton has a treasured memory of meeting a royal princess at the Met Gala. As celebrities across the U.S. look forward to the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s star-studded gala, Kathy remembers the night she met Princess Diana. The late Princess of Wales was an iconic fashionista and dominated the magazine covers for decades.
Even though time has passed since Kathy bumped into the Princess, she wouldn’t share many of the details. However, she did reveal that they bonded over a designer bag.
“We both had the little Lady Dior bag,” she remembered. “I was very excited that I had a bag like hers, because there weren’t many in America.”

“Princess Diana came, and so I got to meet her,” Kathy told Us Weekly. “That was very exciting.”
But over the years, Kathy’s rubbed shoulders with many celebrities at the Met Gala. She also cherishes another brief meeting with the late American philanthropist, socialite, and writer, Brooke Astor.
Brooke approached Kathy and said, “I love your costume,” Kathy recalled. “I had on Oscar de la Renta little knickers … and a white ruffled Oscar de la Renta on top. And she said, ‘I love your costume.’”
The annual fundraiser for The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute is traditionally held on the first Monday in May. Guests are by highly-coveted invitation only, and the list is carefully guarded prior to the event.
When asked if she expected to see any Bravo stars this year at the Met Gala, Kathy had no idea. “Anna Wintour makes that list, so I can’t weigh in on that,” Hilton laughed. “They all deserve to go, once. I mean, it’s great. I have been back in the day, and it is very, very exciting.”
