While some fans question the 16-year age gap between Demi Engemann and her husband Bret Engemann, Demi has no worries. The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives star posted a TikTok on June 22, making fun of their age difference. As PinkPantheress‘ song “Illegal” played, Bret and Demi shook hands, as if meeting for the first time. “My name is Pink and I’m really glad to meet you,” the lyrics sing. “You’re recommended to me by some people / Hey, ooh, is this illegal?/ Feels like it’s illegal.”
In the caption, Demi pushed the joke further. “Basically how it went when we met bc we’re 16 years apart.” she wrote. “I thought he was cute when I was 10. Married my local celebrity crush.”
When a commenter highlighted the words of the song, with “It is illegal,” Demi merely clapped back, “Lock him up!”
Demi and Bret Engemann’s age gap is a topic of much discussion
Though some followers suggested their relationship was inappropriate, Demi stood firm. One person asked how Demi would feel if her seven-year-old daughter Maude was in a similar situation.
“I was never introduced to Bret at 10,” Demi explained. “He was friends with a mutual friend and well known around town. We never met until I was an adult.”
For those concerned that Bret crossed a line, Demi clarified. “We met for the first time … when I was 22,” she told Us Weekly. “I had heard of him, but he didn’t know I existed before then.”
Coincidentally, this is not Bret’s first brush with reality TV. His first wife was Angie Harrington, who was a friend of the Real Housewives of Salt Lake City in Seasons 1 and 2 before becoming a Housewife in Season 3. Bret and Angie share two sons, while Demi shares Maude with her ex-husband Blake Corbin. Additionally, the former BYU QB was almost on Clare Crawley’s season of The Bachelorette,
Even though she knew Bret as a child, they didn’t become friends until she was an adult. Bret was “very sweet and supportive” to both her and her husband, when they were going through their divorce.
Despite having a lifelong crush on Bret, she waited until her divorce was final to date him. “Out of respect for my ex-husband and the divorce not being finalized, we waited to go on any official date,” she previously explained. “We dated for about 10 months before getting engaged.”
