How KJ Apa Being a Father Helped Shape His Sobriety

When a celebrity sits down for an interview with Andy Cohen, you never know what to expect. He doesn’t shy away from the messy questions. He’ll ask you about your sex life and your finances without hesitation, but during a recent interview with KJ Apa, the two shared a really sweet moment regarding fatherhood.

While KJ was playing a high schooler on Riverdale, he and model Clara Berry welcomed a son named Sasha. The actor was 24 years old when his son was born in September 2021, and he explained to Andy how fatherhood helped push him towards sobriety.

KJ Apa talks about being a “young dad”

To promote his upcoming film, The Map That Leads to You, KJ sat down with Andy on SiriusXM’s Andy Cohen Live. Of course, they talked about a lot of unserious things, like KJ showing off his “hairy butt” in the movie. However, the two did share a genuine moment when talking about fatherhood.

Andy asked, “What’s it like being a young dad?”

KJ said being a young dad felt “awesome,” but it had its “pros and cons.” For example, he doesn’t have many friends his age who are also parents. Andy, who had two children in his 50s via surrogate, said he could relate to that feeling.

“Guess what? I’m an old dad. I don’t meet many guys my age with little kids either,” Andy replied.

The fatherhood conversation continued, and KJ admitted that being a dad “forced” him to get sober. He got caught up in his meteoric rise to fame, and when he found out he was going to be a dad, he knew he needed a lifestyle change. Now, he feels like his son not only changed his life, but he saved it, too.

“I truly believe Sasha, having Sasha saved my life,” KJ admitted.

He continued, “You know, that like, you can empathize with why someone would kill someone because you love someone so much. And that’s that same feeling that I go, ‘I love you so much more than me.’ And in order to, I have to sacrifice all these things for you, and that’s what a good parent does.”

Clearly, this is one young actor with his head on straight. Sasha is lucky to have him as a dad.
