Barack Obama’s wife talks about their life
Michelle Obama recently sat down for an interview ahead of the launch of her new book, The Look. During the discussion, the attorney and author discussed how she currently felt free and made decisions for herself that didn’t concern others, especially her children and husband.
During the discussion, she shared that her two daughters, Sasha and Malia, had grown up and that her husband was doing well. “We are the former president and first lady,” she told PEOPLE. “It’ll be 10 years, almost, that we have not been in that job. Okay? We are formers.” She stressed that her family’s current place in life felt “freeing.”
Also in the interview, Obama, who turned 61 in January, discussed what it was like being in her sixties. “Oh, a wonderful time. It’s a wonderful time,” she shared. “I feel like this is the first time in my life that when I say and do something, here in this interview, writing this book, rolling it out in this way, these are my choices.”
Moreover, she revealed she dyed her graying hair. “I’m not wincing [when I see one] but I’m not leaving it there long,” she added. She explained that her practice of dying her hair came from her late mother, Marian Robinson, who died last year. She revealed that her mother had “beautiful” sandy blonde hair that meshed well with gray. “I was like, ‘Yeah, I’m going to be doing that too,'” she further stated.
Obama expressed she would let other aspects of her aging go on naturally, noting she didn’t do anything else to tackle it, apart from dying her hair. “I think, fortunately, Black don’t crack, so I’m doing all right,” she added. “But yeah, I will be dying my hair until there is no dye in the land.”
Obama also discussed her health, stressing its importance. She revealed she controlled her diet, exercised, and made regular visits to the doctor, adding that she never missed a mammogram. The Becoming author shared that she did everything required to maintain her health so she could enjoy her life. She emphasized she wasn’t ill, adding, “I’m as vibrant as I’ve ever been.”
